d44 axle shafts

I have not taken a 44 apart yet to see, when you cut the shaft and respline one do yuo have to build up the end of the shaft or do you just have to cut new splines. I have seen some axles that the spline is bigger than the shaft?

at least on 30 spline shafts you need to make the outside diameter smaller and then respline it, with the othe rside of the coin the only way is to order a new custom shaft
