I was told they had some kind of vacuum operated locker, is this true?

Some do.depends on what year your talking about.

77 and 78 cherokee , one is a gold eagle the other a chief

They are dana 44's

If they have a air line out of the pumkin top then they may be arb equipped

The air operated locker really isnt a locker at all it is paiece that slides a coupler with splines onto a intermediate shaft and you get your front end working in four wheel drive. Sadly those fronts used in FSJ cherokke(ds) and small wheel base jeeps 87-on never came with factory posi's. It is located on the passenger side and has 3 vaccum tubes coming out of it. If someone swapped axles in your jeeps or you have a arb they yes you have a vaccum operated 4wd system, but a air locker was never offered in 01-back. What you have if they are stock are heavy duty dana 44 front ends

So what does the vacuum switch in the glove box do?

It locks up your Quadra-Trac. The Transfer case is full time 4 w drive, but when you get into really sticky situations, you turn the switch to "EMERGENCY DRIVE" That fully locks in the transfer case.

I'll stick with my dana 300 any day over that setup. Thanks for the answeres. I will start a new thread and ask something else
