Here we see edelbrocks attempt at gas mileage brought on by the gas shortage of the 70's. This intake is almost worthless if it wasnt for its aluminum structure and its ability to offer a idle at a low low rpm. Look at those ports man! 111!!!

Now look at the HUGE ports on this R4B !!! If youlook at the center bolt holes they are redrilled for use with later heads. WOW :!:

Have you ever seen the Holley intake for our AMC's?

I think it was called the Z-series, or something.
Pretty much a SP2P, with the rear two ports connected by a long U shaped port at the back of the intake.

I think the ports were actually smaller than the SP2P's, though I never seen them both side by side.

For some reason there's a ton of SP2P's out there, they're kinda the Thornbirds of intakes

Thornbird of intakes........

I actually had very great luck with thornies when they are cut, but in stock form yeah they suck....LOL

Ive seen the holley's...kinda rare. I believe that offy even had a small port AMC V8 intake.

it has ports like a torker and air gap :t:

I have two of the Holley Dominator manifolds. Yep, the ports are smaller than the SP2P. Most folks just laugh when they see them, but my buddy is going to put one of them on his new 290 in his Commando. On that small-displacement motor in such a light vehicle, he ought to have great throttle response, and should be able to just motor through the bad terrain at around 500 RPM. Plus they look great, and were cheap!

I have a Performer on my 360 Jeep. Im always chasing more power from idle to 2500rpm and fuel economy. On paper the SP2P looks better with its longer smaller runners. Any opinions? Are there many around?

Welcome aboard!! Their are these around that are new...kyle johnson of edelbrock had sold about 350 new castings to private parties...problem is that they were all (from what i was told) 2nd grade castings and now machined well. The problem with the sp2p is that you run into a lean condition. This can be solved by running premium in engines with a compression that is less than 9-1.

I've already upped the compression by using smaller chamber heads and the motor pings if I get it too hot, so the SP2P might not be the go. The Aussie dollar has died again against the greenback and I live in a remote area where fuel is very expensive. Trying to avoid using premium. Actually the AMC performer's ports look smaller than the small block Chevy performer's ports.

performer port smaller than chevy? I remember having both side by side and the chevy performer was a tinkerbell....then again I did part out all my chebby stuff.....WAY TOO CHEAP :!:

Here is the breakdown

1 edelbrock performace package
a. heads to intake :(

2. 1 350 block .030 over fresh new 4 bolt mains and new cam bearings
3. 350 block bored .060 2bolt mains new cam bearings
4. 400 bored .030 4 bolt mains
5. 1 350 crank stroked to 383
6. 1 400 crank ground to accept 350 mains ground to make a 377ci
7. msc parts...chrome water pump (high flow) high pressure oil pump..ect and every gasket and moly ring to put together 5 motors
8. camel back heads 2 sets one reman stock 2nd set ported to the max with stainless valves.
9. set of highly ported 487x heads with stainless valves

for $600.00!

Some chevy freak must have been nuts huh?

AMC IS SO WORTH IT

The SP2P was ment to run with stock single exhaust manifolds. A tork builder. Most people make the mistake of adding a hi-flow exhaust system which defeats the purpose. I'll take tork over horsepower any time, but I like the slow go!

I got one of the Holley Dominators at the local U-pull-it for $17.99. I lifted the hood of an old Wagoneer, It was so greasy I couldn't see what it was, but could tell it wasn't factory, Scratched some grease away with a screwdriver and could see aluminum, so I took it off (had a factory Motorcraft 4bbl on it). Brought it home and hit it with the Hotsy before I could read the words Holley or Dominator on it. After I read up on it, I found it's worth about what I paid. :?:  Sits on the garage shelf for a conversation piece with my other AMC buds.

Had one of these on my 304 and didn't even know it was a POS!!! All I knew at the time was it was a four barrel, and aluminum, and realtively cheap from Ebay! Soooo...I bought a performer on ebay. The thing of it is, the motor runs pretty good with this manifold!! And I have dual flomasters w/ 2 1/4 in. pipe. Still running exhaust manifolds though. Gonna do the Edelbrock headers when I get the money (no exhaust mods- which is a good thing cuz I already spent $400 on my custom flowmasters-complete system w/no cats) :lo1l: :t:

So...after reading this, I am curious. I am running an SP2P on a 401 bored .030, Comp 260H, AFB 750 with stock exhaust manifolds from the original 360 into single 2.5" exhaust with only a glasspack. I found that if I feather the manual choke down a bit, the power comes up at highway speeds around 65. No tach, this is a 88 Gr Wag with 3.73 gears and 32" tires, estimated 2600 rpm at 65.

You think I am running too lean with these small ports? It feels like it ain't breathin good enough. I have been wondering if I need to open up the bottom. Got a set of Hedmann headers to install and plan to change to duals.

Some people say the SP2P is great for the low end torque for off road use with 360 and 401. Some say ditch the SP2P for a Performer. Opinion?

Thanks!

Definitely find a performer if you have a 304. Really woke mine up. You can actually feel the secondaries open up now, and that is a wonderful thing :t: :? =D> :lo1l:

No bottom end loss, total gain everywhere with my combo, and I don't even know how big/small/calibration my carb is! How do you tell how many CFM on a Carter AFB?

Thanks for the feedback. The more I look around, it sounds like the SP2P is a real mistake for a 401. :-|

I found a document on the web that helped me figure out my 750...

To determine Carter AFB carb flow, measure the butterfly bores and use the table below:

CFM Venturi Diameter Bore Diameter
primary secondary primary secondary
--------------------------------------------------------
400 1 1/8 1 1/4 1 7/16 1 7/16
500 1 3/16 1 1/4 1 7/16 1 11/16
575 1 1/4 1 9/16 1 9/16 1 11/16
625 1 3/16 1 9/16 1 7/16 1 11/16
750 1 7/16 1 9/16 1 11/16 1 11/16

9000 Series AFB Code Deciphering:
Base part number is 9000 and the last three digits refer to flow rating. For example, 9625 is a 625 CFM AFB carb. Adding 0, 9625 means it was set up for a Chevy style linkage, adding 1, 9626, means it is a 625 for a Chrysler, adding 2, 9627, means it is for Ford; adding 10, 9635, means provision for EGR. If the carb is an aftermarket version, it will have a 9xxx cast in the front near where the mounting stud goes through.

So I gather that this means that all Edelbrock AMC Performer intake manifolds have big ports and thus are good?
