the spring reduces the flow of oil to be recirculated in the pump. The AMC V8 oil pump recirculates this oil when the pressure in the return from the oil filter becomes to great for the spring and the plunger moves back. Stock springs allow a higher percentage of oil to be recirculated in the pump and in extreme cases the oil pumps do not put out much volume. We have found that the stock spring weakens over time nad especially when the engine is overheated! In turn causes no#1 Cam bearing degridation, lifter diameter change due to friction and eventually a spun main or Thrust bearing wear causing rod knock. Stock springs are rated for 250 degree's and loose their ability to spring back after they have been repeatidly overheated. Here are examples of where the oil flows when the plunger is pushed back.

Hello...a couple of questions.

Aren't the new pieces sold w/o the bypass?

Since the pressure can get so high, how about a larger hole to reduce the pressure by increasing the volume?

are you talking oil filter bypass or pressure bypass?

are you talking oil filter bypass or pressure bypass?

What is the difference between the two? I have heard that one bypasses the filter, is this true?

So the high pressure spring doesn't up the oil prssure, it just delays the oil from dumping back into the pan, forcing oil into the system for a longer time period, correct?

Gremlin the oil filter bypass is located where you screw the oil filter onto. It has a small composite plunger and a small spring and is retianed by the plate that is held in by the oil filter stud. This bypass is very outdated and in 1987 Chrysler started to cast these in as they found them to be a source of major engine wear. We sell the newer style oil filter adaptor and even nickel plate it for wear. You can also find these style oil filter adaptors in 87-91 Grand wagoneer's. The oi lpressure bypass is mostly used when the engine is cold and sends oil back to the pump when the pressure is too high.

We discontinued the hp oil pressure spring as they were mis-used. You cannot use a hp spring and a updated oil filter adaptor you risk blowing apart your oil filter or oil pump gasket.

yes they will blow out the seal on your oil filter to and jack the pressure up to 120 + psi I know and that is with the old style oil filter adapter too with the by-pass in it
