hey, im sticking a ford 302 infront of my T-150... and i was wondering how strong is this transmission... it comes with v8 power, but 304 power isnt exactly EFI 302 power. When you guys put the 360's and 401's your always talking about in your jeeps... what manual transmission's do you use? has anyone retained the T-150 with a 360, and what sort of luck have you had with it? im trying to get an idea of what this transmission can do, atleast untill i can afford to put an NP435 in. maybe next winter. Thanks guys :sa:

a friend blew up his t-150 behind a 360 in one week. It was right after a complete frame up restore and the tranny was the only thing that was not apart. So it could have been bad from the time he put it in. They are supposed to be a medium duty tranny just not very good gear ratios

I will take this approach

1. I have seen T150's blow up under a 304
2. I have seen T150's Last behind built 401's for years

I think alot of it has to do with how the tranny is setup, are the sychro's good and what is the condition of the inner bearings. The T150 is a medium duty tranny with a biased on the heavy duty side, these little slop boxes are tough as nails, i dont think you'll have a problem with it behind your 302..unless your starting with a bad tranny, other wise you could go t18 or t19 form a scout with a dana 20...those are pretty common (well the t19 is). What is the end result...just a driver or a rockcrawler ...mudder(t150's dont work very good in the mud)

well the T-150 was reportedly rebuilt about 2 years ago... it has since gone about 6,000 miles... it shifts like any new transmission, always goes into her gears, i have never heard her grind, never popped out of gear... so i assume the T-150 is in as good condition as you can expect for it to be. It wont last long, or travel to tellico - but it can get me rolling on the street untill i have the NP435 plan - the NP435 plan it taking longer b/c it have to either spend big bucks on a D20 adapter, or find myself another transfer case. Thanks for your opinions, what i gather is that it will handle it, but dont screw around too much.

the only thing I ever had wrong with a t-150 was the synro for 1st and 2nd go out and had a 304 and a 360 on it and did not baby it at all with eather motor ran that tranny for about 13 yr

For the size of the T-150 I think they are real strong. I have one behind my 304 and it never pops out of gear the only complaint in the synchros in it. I just gota be easy going from 2nd to 3rd on mine. But I have it behind a wamed up 304 and it has worked great. New tranny is going in because I decided to add about 100 cubes under the hood 8)

If your was rebuilt 6k ago I bet it is good to go.
