When I get some free time I am going to replace my 3.73's with some 4.56's any tips aside from a lot of   and bugging the Mudrat to drive me to the parts store 5 or 6 times a day and then :occasion5:

:-| Recommendations.....keep the  down to a minimum until after the gears are done, its not difficult to set them up just is a detail oriented task. Go over the tools you will need and ensure you have them. Start with good install kits so you have all the shims, gaskets, and other small parts you will need. Have fluid, and if you don't have a locker its a good time to put one in. Have you set up gears before? If not read up on it or get the video for it. Prior planning and having all you need will make it go much smoother (as it does with everything). :t:

Remember that gear lube only takes up .002 of the lash
gear set up can be simple or complicated, in my cases always friggin complicated

first thing look at the factory pinion for a + or- then look at the new gears
+ or- there should be a chart with the gears and see what it is that should get you in the ball park for pinion depth
then mesure your old shim pack when you take it apart and writh it down for the pinion and carrior shims to that will give you a base to start from and from there it is trial and error fron there pinion rotation is in in lb to

Thanks. Where do I get the video at?
Couldn't I use a depth gauge or measure the old pinion w/ shims to determine pinion depth?

I am a ring and pinion virgin.

I am also sure I will be doing this :kamahlitude2:

I will call and see if my distributor sells the video seperate from gear packages. Normally if you tell one of the major Gear distributors that you are doing it yourself they will offer the video and all the tools you will need.

the + or - will give u the pnion depth between the gears u have to the new gears

Called the distributor but didnt' talk to my sales rep. The guy I talked to said they don't sell just the video, but I think that is bull, so I will call monday and ask my regular sales rep.

Well, bring it by and we'll watch it after the superbowl - and again when we're sober ;-) Just to cut down on the number of trips to the parts store ;-)

OK, here it is a week later and Rob has his rear-end done and new poly spring bushings to boot (as well as rear shocks and a quick weld-o on his exhaust. :-|
I must comment he took all y'alls advice:

1. Drinking was deffinately at a minimum (Tigger, one beer throughout the whole ordeal :!: )
2. It was friggin complicated (MC) (but the carrier was only 5 or 6 times in and out - it was the pinion bearing that was a REAL PAIN!!!)
3. Higer math didn't help (Fuzz, "first thing look at the factory pinion for a + or- then look at the new gears ") It was a 3.08 to 4.56 with a whole new carrier - we swagged it. Since there was no setup bearing we used the old one for a ballpark figure. To get it off the new pinion took the full weight of the 20 ton press, a cut-off wheel, a torch, a spring steel prybar and a 3' breaker bar, and the Hulk on the other end 111!!!
4. Video? What video??? Rob watched it and said it showed some good pics of various different axles, and a perfect assembly without the steps on how to get there.

5. Here's some pics of Wink'n and Blink'n (or is it Laural and Hardy?) I just put the links in because I was too lazy to resize them  Most are over 400K...and exceed the 2.25 wide format for the forum..

This is what happens when you stand too close to the press and the prybar sipps off!!! Dave is looking for an earing to fit!!!

A bearing separator wqould have saved you a lot of grief w/ that pinion bearing.
Also, the trick to making set-up bearings is to relieve a little material from the portion which makes contact (inside of inner race, outside of outer race). I use an abrasive drum of a size slightly smaller than the ID of the inner race. Outer races can be gently abraded w/ a grinder or belt or disc sander.
Relieve just enough material so that the bearing can be removed/replaced by hand.
Having a good set of setup bearings makes the multiple assemblies/dis-assemblies of a diff set-up much more pleasant.

I wish I had know you guys were gonna do that regear. My friend in Nashville has the Randy's bearing remover that I could have gotten him to mail me to borrow (if I ask nice enough!). Watched him use it and it saves SOOO much time and effort. You can see it in this pic:

It is the blue kit on the right hand side. Anywho, off to bed.
