The steering Damper is leaking fluid, I am assuming it needs to be replaced. It looks simple enough. Is there any secrets to replacing one of these and any suggestions as to what brand etc. or just go stock?

Yup... If it's leaking, it's toast.
Stock replacement is fine for light offroading/stock tires. Big tires and/or serious offroading, an aftermarket unit will give you more control.
There are plenty of them out there, ans some aftermarket units are probably not much more than stock.
