We talk alot around here about building up HP and such but what should be done different if you want to build for good low end TQ with an AMC V8?

Never hear much about that.... Interesting topic the 'Rat has told me about a couple 4 cylinder diesel blocks up for auction on the Gov Liquidation site. Would changing your overall gear ratio's help with torque? :-|

Yes changing the over all gear ratio's will create more torque to the wheels, but I am not wanting put that tall of a gear in the rear end for highway driveability with a 4speed tranny.

I have always drive 6cyls off road and there is TONS of low end torque out of them (idle - 1800). What RPM range does a V8 normally wheel at?

math geek time

250tq x 6.72 1st gear x 2.72 xfercase low x 4.88 diff gears = 22,299.6 Ft lbs of TQ at the rear axle.

To keep that rate of TQ in low gear and first but have 4.10 Gears I would need 22,299.6 / (6.72 x 2.72 x 4.10) = 297.6 Ft Lbs of TQ from the engine at the same RPM as before.

The other thought is with 1st gear being SO low, using 2nd gear would be a good option to have and with the T18a 2nd being a 3.9:1 which is respectable and able to keep me wheeling and not just spinning.
