MY DAD BOUGHT AN 84 XJ WAG A WHILE BACK, IT'S NOT HOME YET AND I HAVE NOT SEEN IT, THE STORY IS THST IT NEEDS A TRANS, I MAY HAVE FOUND ONE FOR $50, BUT 2.8 G.M. MOTOR :(: THEY SUCK, IF I FIND ONE OF THE 2.8 XJ'S THAT ARE IN NICE SHAPE I MAY HAVE TO DO A MOTOR SWAP. :-|

I THINK IT WOULD BE IF IT CAME FROM A RWD, I DON'T KNOW IF THEY HAD A 3.1 OR JUST A 2.8 IN RWD, YOU COULD EITHER USE A FWD MOTOR WITH A MULTIPORT SETUP FROM A RWD OR JUST A MULTIPORT 2.8, OTHER THINGS TO THINK ABOUT WOULD BE THE NEWER 3.4, USED IN CAMARO? OR I'M NOT SURE BUT I THINK A BUICK 3800 MAY HAVE THE SAME BELHOUSING, THE OTHER THING I'D TRY IS A 4.3 OR SMALL BLOCK WITH DIFFERENT TRANS ETC, BUT UNLESS YOU WERE LUCKY ENOUGH TO HAVE A 44 REAR IT WOULD NEED AN AXLE SWAP TOO OR IT WOULD BE TOAST LIKE THE ONE I HAD IN MY 4.0 5SPD COMMANCHE.

There are other motors you can replace the 2.8L with. There is even a Caddy (4.6L I think) motor that fits the trans! LOL! (Guy that did the swap with a later AX-15 4 cyl trans had some fun keeping the body from twisting!)
One other possibility I have been looking into is getting a 904 from a CJ 4 cyl, which has the same 90 degree bolt pattern as Chev 4.3L and V8 then putting in the 229 V6 my son has in an '80 Chev Malibu wagon. I think it would work sweet!
