Really dirty oil

Ok I have a reacuring issue with my 360.

The oil is filthy.. after at least one month maybe two months.
I dont put that many miles on the car , I bought the engine used ( supposedly ) rebuilt and this weekend when I was swapping the cam and heads I discovered that is a .040 over rebuild but I suspect the the bypass valve on the oil pump is stuck open.

I dont know how to trouble shot that other then taking it apart and checking the valve for Tommorow I am going to cut the oil filter apart and check for debris. Also what is the best WIX oil filter that will fit my Javelin , The one that NAPA recomends is kinda small. Bigger is better right ?
