AMC/Jeep High Torque Starter

I was looking around on the net and found the MEAN GREEN tigh torque starter. Almost fell over when I saw the price tag $299 (sticker shock)
Do any of you know of a comparable starter for a little less $$? We have a 79 CJ with 304 and T400 setup. I dont know if it matters but the Engine is out of a 72 Ambassador. Any help would be greatly appreciated. I did a search for high torque starters here in BTF and came up empty.

Guys they are all a joke and use stock hitachi motor and gear reduction unit....you can get one on ebay for $129.99 and its the same as a mean green


Crazy enough they work extremely well, I have one in a cj7 with a 11-1 401....

That's what I was told. Look for one with a Hitachi or Nippon-Denso motor, the rest is about the same. I just bought one off eBay for $149 shipped, should show up any day. It will be on my AMX, since there isn't much room to spare with 1 7/8" super comp headers. I actually have to remove the right header from the head to get the starter out.

Bob, your going to love it! mke sure you dab some silicone on the leds as they are bare and dont be afraid to clock it...they come unable to bolt on without clocking...well in my experience. It looks like a $50 unit with a $20 billet aluminum adaptor..i researched the patent as well.......its a great little starter and it gives you a cool sound when you start your AMC V8

I ordered the starter yesterday, hell of alot better than paying 299 for the Mean Green. It is due to arrive 07 Jun. The members of this forum are the HEAT When we get it started ill let you all know. Damn I am excited....lol
