    NP205 Stuffed In A J-truck

    On another list, MC wrote;

    They have 4 degrees of clocking to the bellhousing. Some adaptors take it up
    MC, You, once again, ARE Da' MAN! How do you know so much?
    So, where, and how long do I have to sleep with whom to find out
    where to get such an adapter that you speak of? Would it go between
    the TC and the Trans? I would have to measure the length of the
    tailshaft into the NP205 to see if I could fudge it w/o compromise
    I guess. My partner is telling me to just run w/ what I got which
    is prolly what I will do after re-engineering the xmember and useing
    short TC X Xmember mounts, but, if there were an easy fix I might look real hard at it. Here are a few pics of the NP205 mocked up behind the TH400 in the 79' J-Truck, it is ALMOST a bolt in swap I swear, if it were not for the clocked Trans it would dam near be a bolt in swap! I can't belive it! Even the PTO is going to fit and the old Q-Track reduction gears leaver is even going to work for the PTO switch LOL!

    Brad it is entirely possible to make a 4 degree wedge that has threaded holes at 0 degrees. We have this type of stuff on CAD if you need a file...I believe we have one of the latest cad files of a th400 to dana20 in .dxf form on the offroad fabricators network....Kyle Pope who is a Autocad salesman runs the site...we donated this file for fun since making adaptors like these is not something we want to do all the time...its exhausting

    Well, I have never done CAD before so seeings as how I am having a hard time finding someone to cut some adapter plates for me I am forced to learn this CAD stuff on my own. Taking 2 unfinished files from the OFN web site I believe originally started by MC, I have buckled down w/ a pair of cheesy calipers, a free CAD program I found on the web, and a whole lot of ambition and I do believe I am very, very, close to finished product(s). This is what I have so far;

    Now when I say cheesy calipers I mean it. These beauties cost all of 9.99 at the local Kragen Auto. I did however do some research and I ordered a pair of Starrett #797B-12/300 digital calipers to recheck all my work with before I go to mill. http://www.starrett.com/pages/931_79...c_calipers.cfm
    I guess these are a new product Starrett has, I will volunteer guinie pig (not that I have a clue as to what is good and bad anywho).
    Why am I doing this? I need (Well, I WANT) an adapter that is not clocked 4* or more low on the NP205 Chevy drop side, like the AMC trannys are, that are clocked 4* clockwise. After I get the 2 adapters I can simply make a cylinder to slip between the two, gussett it up, weld it up and roll!
    That is AFTER I perhaps have two adapter plates cut out of Teflon, or Nylon, or Acrylic or something disposable first to make DAM sure my measurements are right, I am not sure what to do, I have never done this stuff before HELP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    Since my last post things have changed. I was forced to think out of the perverbeal box, due to twin stick shifter mounting considerations. Some thought and a consult w/ our fearless leader , MC, I decided to pull the trigger and have / ask MC to make me a clocking ring "just" for the TH400 which he is supposed to be buzzin' out today, yes Sunday, gotta love the dedication .
    So it will be a TH400 X TH400 clocking ring IN FRONT of the TH400 X NP205 adapter. This will be considerably less work then making a clocked TH400 X NP205 adapter . When it is all said and done, barring any unforseen circumstances, the NP205 will be clocked about 12 Degrees counterclockwise as you sit in the drivers seat. degrees would bring the NP205 TC down to square to the world but the clocking needs to be of sufficient degrees so as to allow for a new set of threaded holes to be punched into the new adapter for countersunk bolts, to bolt the new adapter to the TH400 itself, so by my calcs , it looks like it will need to get clocked a good 6-8 degrees past plumb to make this happen. Like so;

    There are other issues doing all this as well . That being the TC shifters. If one were to take, let's say, the GM NP205 twin stick that a guy on Ebay sells, which is what I opted for, and after making mods to the main pivot points of said to fit a 1/2" bolt, one will find the shifters protruding through the trans tunnel cover at the very rear of the trans cover tunnel. In my Jeep (J-10, a 1979) on the passenger side of the trans tunnel cover, forward, there is another small hatch where another TC shifter would protrude through in a different drivetrain variation of this truck. This is where I am thinking about placing my twin stick shifters. Up close to the AC and out of the way. This is going to entail making a linkage(s) between the now chopped off Ebay shifter shaft(s), chopped off below the trans tunnel covers and then weld on tabs w/ holes to accept misalignment 90* fittings on them, and the existing TC shifter shaft hatch that is in the existing trans tunnel cover. There will be issues w/ leverage and throw angles of the shifters but I do believe I can overcome all obsticles and get-er-done.
    Now you watch, just because I suggested it here first, someone will try to beat me to it, but I plan on using twin HURST shift sticks. I actually bought them dam near a year and a half ago now. The coolness factor will really be up there.
    To mount the front pivot point of the forward controlled Hurst shift sticks I am thinking about bolting a pivot rod of sorts to the top of a TCI trans shield I picked up on EBay for 20 bucks.
    If you are still w/ me you have the J-Truck disease too I see!~

    have you seen this: http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eB...spagename=WDVW

    Dont know if it does what you want it to do but I just seen that and thought of this thread.

    Yes I have seen it and others like it. The problem doing it this way is
    the TC gets clocked and the 1/2" bolt hole that is used for the twin stick shifter mechanizm does not get clocked and it creates even more obsticles. I appreciate the reply !

    Yea, I see what you mean about the shifters. Have you thought about useing a later model one with the round pattern? That might be a little easyer to clock.
