I contemplated that several years ago. I even came up with a 4 cyl Perkins diesel. If it had been turbo, I would have done it.
One of the best little rock crawlers I've seen was a Toyota pickup (factory 4 cyl turbo diesel) that was converted to 4WD. He'd just idle up to and across everything.
