    bolt size?

    hi
    i am rebuilding a 360
    i want to replace my 304 (1979)in my cj7
i already rebuilt a 304 for my friends car ,thanks to this forum
now i found out that the bolds of the flywheel are different
the flexplate wich came of the 360 uses bigger bolts to be conected to the cranckshaft

can i drill the holes bigger in my 304 flywheel
and how do this come ,is this a different ore special cranckshaft?

its a second halfe 1971 360 (low compresion)

    thanks again willem

Check with www.4wd.com and they should have the bolts you need.

    Crank bolts

You better TRIPLE check what you are doing!!! & keep that drill away from the crank!!!

    flywheel bolts

OK. Another trap to fall into, do you have the correct flywheel? There is a difference between the 727 one & the Turbo400 one, plus you have the flywheels for the two sizes of BW auto trannies. Also, there are usually extra holes, so make sure you r looking at the correct ones. Also, make sure the flywheel fits the crank, just to be thorough. I just can't believe that there were converters for the 727 that took smaller bolts than other converters for the 727, should all take the four 7/16-20 bolts.

Another thing, the converter bolts are special, fine thread 7/16-20 x .750". I had to order mine thru Summit for $26 (4 bolts!!!), with shipping.

All the above is based on the premise that you are talking about the flexplate to converter bolts. If you are indeed talking about the flexplate to crank bolts, they HAVE to be the same size, unless maybe there was a difference in export engines, or your 304 (or the 360) is not really the engine you think it is/was. I, of course, could be wrong, but I do know that a 290 flywheel used the same bolts as 360/390/401.

    Just trying to help.

    hi,great thanks for answering
im talking about the flexplate to crank bolts
actualy there was a th400 behind the 360 witch i built and there is a T150 (3 gear)manual shift in my jeep behind the 304

the 304 is still in my jeep but i already rebuilt another 304 thats why i notist the differents

i thougt that a 304 and the 360 uses the same cranckshaft an flywheel, the only differents is the diameter of the pistons

regards, thanks for your pations, and excuse my for my english

aren't 304s and 360s balanced different. therefore, your shouldn't use a 304 flywheel/flexplate on a 360. i'm sure its been done, but... i could be wrong, but probably not. anyone second that?

bullets don't hurt, but the holes do.

Just a thought, but how much play should there be with the bolts in only just before "finger tight"? Reason I ask is I have a 727 behind a 232 cid. I didn't think to check but was wondering should there be any side2side play before torquing the crank bolts?

I as well thought the only difference between 304s and 360s was the block and some 360 came with 4 bbls.
