I've got Dana 44s in both ends right now. I have 2 sets of 4.88s for the 44s, and a set for the 60. I don't know if the budget can support the narrowing of the 60, buying a Detroit, and setting up disc brakes all at once. So I'll probably set up both 44s, and swap in the 60 later.

Once the 60 is in (probably over this winter), I'll sell the 44 complete. It's 55.5" wide (82-86 CJ widetrack), SOA, it will have 4.88s, a Detroit Softlocker, and disc brakes. It will come with an extra set of axle shafts too. I'll post up when it's for sale.

I would say that the super low gearing of the older granny low transmissions almost makes up for lack of overdrive. You can get away with stepping down your axle gears because the tranny makes up the difference.

I'm running an SM465 with 4.56 gears to push my 37's. With a 4.3 Atlas, I'm still getting almost 130:1 in low range, first gear while only pushing 2700 RPM on the freeway at 65.

To get the same 130:1 crawl ratio with the NV4500, you have to run 5.38's. With those gears, you're pushing 2400 RPM on the freeway at 65.

The freeway RPMs are only marginally better. And for the money, I like having a cast iron transmission that's basically bulletproof.

When you factor in the 401 in my CJ, the 4.56's are just fine for getting up and moving in any gear.

well i used that calculator and it seems like either a 4.10 or a 4.56 gear will be the way to go.....can i get the 4.56 gears into an amc 20 though....i kinda wanted to keep the amc 20 have sold axles and a locker........???

It depends on which NV4500 you get. The early Dodge unit had a 6:1 first gear, very similar to the T-18. The later NV4500s were only 4:1. The internals are swappable, and the Dodges were even a bolt-up to the Jeep Dana 300/Atlas.

I just finished a 360/tf727 install on my 83 cj7 with 4.10's and it seems to be geared just fine. Still rolls down the road nicely and I am getting 15 mpg!

    amc 20

I have been running 35,s with mine also and go offroad quite often and other than 1 broken Moser axle at the 2002 Dakota challenge I havnt had any trouble. I did break my Dana 30 frt so I removed the Arb from the front and went back to an open diff 30. It is an auto and even though it sees a lot of rock trails I keep a light foot and go slow mostly.
84 CJ 7 304, Arb rear, 35 BFG,s with a 2 1/2 spring lift only and to many other mods to list, plus a offroad trailer also on 35 BFG,s
