reman heads

I was bored today at worka t auto zone so i decided to start lookin through the catalogs for some AMC related parts when i fell upon 291's for $128 a piece for a reman head.......does that sound all that bad of a price to you guys?

If you can get REAL 291Cs, it's a steal. I'll bet if you order one in, it will be 090, 993, or 502 casting, all considered "service replacements", even though we know they're not.

Well the thing is they have a listing for 502 heads also, never got too far into the catalog.....damn phones! But it listed the 291's under a 71' 360 Jeep and AMC only......does that sound right? Isnt the chamber a diff size between the different heads? If so you couldnt put 291's on one side then 502' or 090's on the other? And i also found that most every I-6 AMC uses a 3 3/4" bore and that the 2.5 GM I-4 uses a 4" bore, same as a 350. I cant wait till we get new catalogs cause all the engine books are mine! Theres one that gives all kinds of specs for different pistons between makes and rings with gaps and thicknesses.

291 heads were 1970 and EARLY 1971, late 71 went to the 993 head, which was considered the "service replacement" for the 291. People seldom replace just 1 head (although I have, when a nearly new engine dropped a valve). The combustion chambers are smaller on the 291, but I did see an engine with a 291 on one side and a 993 on the other. It did run pretty smooth.

Just because it's listed in the catalog doesn't mean they have a set in stock. Try to order a set and you'll probably find them on "indefinite backorder" or something like that.

I could give them a call to see wether they'd have em or not though. Next time its slow and im working ill give em a ring and ask if they are in stock or not.

I paid $300-400 a pair for rebuildable cores for my Jeep and AMX + valves, springs, retainers, etc. $128 for a bolt-on ready head is cheap.
