    CJ 4 Speed Transmission ?

This might be first grade but below is the list of trannys for Peaches '86 CJ7. I know the list says the 177/178 R for trucks but I have a question.

Peaches tranny ('86 CJ7, 258, 4sp, D-300, D-30/44, 3.31 gears factory) is not aluminum, it is cast iron & I was just sitting here thinking about it & all these web site saying the CJ has the aluminum tranny. Hummm, now the CJ8 I got (in pieces) has the aluminum tranny. Can someone explain this? I was told her Jeep was ordered w/a tow package but ???

    Thanks,
    Rollbar

P.S. I am also getting some conflicting reports about putting this tranny behind a 360 & people saying it will hold up just fine but then again, I was told it wouldn't. HUmmm, ???

The T-176, T-177, and T-178 are medium duty Ford transmissions manufactured by Tremec in Mexico. They have an aluminum case with the casting number 2604203. This transmissions has a 1 1/8" 10 spline input shaft and a 23 spine output shaft. These transmissions are very similar except for gear ratios. These transmissions use the standar bolt pattern used by Ford transmissions.

    Usage:
The T-176 was used in CJs from 1980-1986 and other Jeep trucks from 1980-1987. The T-177 and T-178 were not used in CJs, only in other Jeep trucks.

    4 speed

The only factory iron 4 speeds offered in a jeep are the T18 and T18 A. The T 18 was offered in CJ,s until 79 but also was offered in J trucks until 85. It has a casting no of T18 or 1301 on the side and is a great gearbox with a 4.03 first gear. The T18 is similar with a 6.32 first. They are both keepers. Given the fact that the factory was prone to using old stock and that there were options available coupled with a lot of Jeep owners tending to swap and modify their rides, the orig tranny may have been swapped out. A friend of mine works at a local jeep rebuilding place and he says even the 97 TJ,s are a mix or older {YJ} and newer parts.

Thanks, I'll look for the numbers to night & post. I did replace the clutch once & I'm telling U it's cast. I bought the Jeep long, long ago w/50K on it & he was the second owner & kept it in the garage & did not wheel it. The first owner sold it right after he got it so everything seems to add up & all the factory stuff jives. If it is the T-18 I'll have to swap my aluminum one out for Peaches cast iron one for the 360 , don't tell Peach

The T-176/Dana 300 was first offered in 1980. The T-18/Model 20 was 79 and older. My memory is that the T-176 is a cast iron tranny, and was only offered for a couple of years. The later T-4 (4 speed) and T-5 (5 speed) were aluminum cased trannies.

Jim its hard to say if someone didnt swap in a T18. Does your T-case have a rear housing made out of steel (Dana 20) or aluminum (Dana 300). I have also seen t19 trannies from scouts with texas pattern 1980 Dana 300 from a scout swapped in (now that took a little while to figure out when I saw it)

MC- the D-300 on her Jeep is cast iron, I mean the whole thing is bullet proof (so to speak) & all the other Jeeps I look @ are aluminum. Now I'm not complaining, I'm just kind of pissed cause I've said many times to Peach, I'm gonna swap your stuff out into mine, she said . I guess I taught her to much about Jeeps

When I bought the Jeep I asked the owner if anything had ben done to it, he replied no (he was older in his years) & said the original owner did nothing to it as he didn't have it that long. It was a trailer/garage queen, but not anymore .
