    way to much oil pressure

i rebuilt my 304 last spring it still has less than 2000 miles on it, when i go to start it the oil gauge reads 80 psi, at idle then when i start to move and barly give it gas to accelerate it goes to 90 psi the only time it drops below 80 is after its been running for an hour then it will sit right at 60 but never lower. i am wondering if somthing is wrong and should i be woried i already shreded one set of cam and dizzy gears. i bought the melling reabuild kit that came with my rebuild kit from summit.

Sounds like a stuck pressure relief valve. There's a large nut/plug on the back of the oil filter adapter, under that is a spring and plunger.

You need to make sure the plunger moves freely in the bore, and that it's facing the right direction. The point goes in first, away from the spring. They can varnish up and stick, brake cleaner works well to clean things, a little scrubbing on the plunger with a scotch-brite if it needs a little more clearance.

Over pressure can cause the dizzy gears to fail, they just weren't designed to carry that much sustained pressure. If you replace them, replace as a matched set, even if one gear looks good, There are at least 3 (maybe more) different "flavors" of gears, each with a different pitch.

I was wondering the same thing. My 401 has 80 psi cold at startup. If I rev it it goes to 90-95 psi (cold). When its warm at idle 40-45. Driving/cruise about 60-65. If I stand on the skinny pedal when its hot it still goes to 80 psi (rev limiter set to 5800 rpm).
I am running Napa 15w40 diesel oil (suppossed to have 1500 zinc). and a napa gold oil filter.
Oh yeah, one more thing. When I start it up, it takes a while to build oil pressure?

Plunger is stuck there because the stock spring shouldnt let the pressure exceed 65psi. Take that plunger out!
