    OIL PUMP GEAR CLEARANCE

JUST GOT MY NEW FRONT COVER AND GEAR SET. I AM UNDER THE IMPRESSION THAT THE OIL PUMP GEARS SHOULD STICK UP FROM THE COVER SURFACE BY .007 NOT BE RECESSED.

IS THIS CORRECT? I REMEMBER READING THIS IN PERFROMANCE AMERICAN SYTLE YEARS AGO. I AM GUESSING THAT WHEN USING A GASKET THAT IS A COMPRESSED THICKNESS OF .008 THEN YOU WOULD HAVE AN END CLEARANCE OF .001. IF THE GEARS SAT BELOW THE COVER SURFACE YOU WOULD HAVE EXCESSIVE CLEARANCE AND LOW PRESSURE HOT....

Sounds about right, gears should stick out from cavity.
Not sure of amount but it is based on gasket thickness.
Think the specs are in the TSM.
And the oil pump cover filter adapter should be flat and smooth.
Lapped mine on a sheet of glass using valve lapping compound.
Oil pressure relief plunger bore should also have a nice smooth finish.
