    AMC 401 block numbers.

    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

DOwn by the crank, behind the pully, the numbers 3230132 are cast in the block.

The waterpump has the number 3234411 cast into the waterpump. Anyone got any idea where I can find any information on these numbers?

I've googled and cant find anything on those specific numbers.

I believe those are just casting numbers for the front cover and water pump. The casting numbers and part numbers seldom matched on AMCs.

The front covers are the same on all AMC V-8s from 66-91, although the oil filter adapter changed slightly. The water pumps are the same on all V-8s from 74-91. 66-73 are shorter, but the same basic housing.

The Block Casting number is located on the drivers side in the back
on top of a ledge created by the Bellhousing mating flange in the block.

Thanks for the info. I guess I'll have to climb no top of the motor as soon as the rain stops...........

Also, displacement is cast into both sides of the block in about 2 inch tall characters
beneath the motor mount stand off brackets.

I know about displacement under the motor mount. I know it's a 401. But that's about all I know. It has the early distributor on it. I know it was swaped into an 86 grand waggie. I was told it was reciently rebuilt and the block looks like it's never been ran.

I am trying to figure out what I've got so I know where to go from here.

I need to put a potential motor build thread up asking for advice once I know what it is...............

Well the heads will give it away. Block casting wil not tell you what year block and its trivial with a 401 because ay changes that were made were very small and wouldnt effect weight or performance. Peel a valve cover off and post the casting number.

OK, pulled the valve covers and the number is 3220502-2 which means.........

    401 74 57.92 2.025 1.680 Dog-Leg Bridged 322 0502

    So I guess it's a run of the mill 1974 401.

I'll start a seperate thread on what the build plan is.
