    TH400 Southern MN

    TH400
    1966 model year
    Output shaft for D20 - no adapter(broke)
AMC belhousing, w/ torque converter and flexplate for 360

EDIT: Pulled the trans. PO must have had a TC bolt loosen. There are a few peek holes in the bell. Need TH400 parts?

Now for sale: Buick TH400 to AMC adapter, flexplate & hardware. Make offer.

Also have D20 t-case complete w/ input gear for TH400 (TH400 output shaft) TH400 to D20 adapter broke.

Make an offer, get this stuff out of my garage.
I don't want to haul it to the junk yard!

The factory TH400 to D20 adapter is very weak. I would recommend one from Bulltear here: Bulltear Adapter

? for you, Does this have the AMC bellhousing or the bellhousing adaptor ring? You state its a 66 so it would have the nailhead or BOP bellhousing with adaptor ring?

yeah but all the internals can be refitted into a AMC case!
The th-400 d20 combo works great in Jeep CJ mudders if you dont mind a short rear drive shaft! I would buy it if I didnt already have one sitting in the garage.

Did this come out of a Commando? There is a chance that the tranny may have some really heavy duty sprags and other internals in it that usually only came in TH400s built for very heavy use applications, motorhomes heavy trucks, ect.
No way to tell for sure without tearing it down.

I agree most likely a J-truck. The TH-400/D20 I got came out of a Commando with a v-6 buick. I dont know what year.
I cant believe no one has taken this one yet, it seems to be a pretty good deal. I looked for a long time to find mine. I just dont have need for a 2nd right now.

iirc, this came out of a J4000

It has a bellhousing adapter for the V8

It is still bolted to the 360 it was originally mated with.

It can be bolted to a buick but a new torque converter would be needed.

    "Roundtop" applications:
    '64 Cadillac
    '64 - '68 Buick with 400, 401 & 425 V8
    '65 - '74 Jeep, w/ Bell Adapter
    '66 & later Rolls Royce

My TH400 book says Jeeps with a Buick V6 use the BOP bellhousing (I have a BOP housed TH400 as well)

The beauty of the TH400 is the number of transfer cases that can be utilised with factory components. (Quadra-trac, D20, Atlas, Stack, NP 203 & 205) The D300 and NP231/241 can be used with aftermarket kits.

iirc, 1970 and earlier TH400s had the 16 element sprag that can be upgraded to the 34 element. This and the use of brass shims instead of plastic ones are what make earlier 400s "stronger" Any late 400 can be upgraded to the sprag type one way clutch by replacing the direct clutch drum with a '70 and earlier or aftermarket. Brass shims can be found in the aftermarket as well. It seems the only reason to have a sprag type one-way clutch would be is you make a lot of high load shifts between 1st and 2nd, like drag racing and hill climbing. The brass shim upgrade would be advisable for use if the trans frequently sees high load / high heat conditions. Most applications do not see this kind of abuse.

    Hope this helps you out.
