    Hey GUYS!!!!

WEll I found my way out of the work grind long enough to get back on AND buy a 68 Javelin.. 290 v8 automatic..

    Pics soon..
Now the questions... 290 v8 how different is this form the 304-360-401?? parts wise I mean.. I have a decent set of 360 dogleg heads, will they work on it? intake man ifold? Distributor and cam? is the lil automatic tranny gonna hold up? I think its a borg warner t-15.. but hey what do I know.. it aint got a T-case behind it so im clueless.

(it will probably get a 401 next year after i save some bucks..which is why i dont want to buy all these parts if they wont work on the later model motors.

    oh and HI Everybody!

Welcome back Goose!! Don't think your 360> parts will fit on the 290 - maybe the dizzy. ID the trans, but if it's mated to a 290, I doubt it will handle the HP out of a stock 401 let alone a built motor. Run it like you got it and save for the big motor.

290 and 304 are basically the same except for deck height and rods. The 290-343-390 are the Gen2 motors, the 304-360-401 are gen3.

360 heads would bolt on (with stepped dowels), but would have the same valve to cylinder wall clearance issues there are with a 304.

Glad to see you back. We'll have to get together some time now that I'm back in Colorado too.

I'd start looking for a 390 NOW, getting harder to find, assuming you'd want a 390 as it would be the 'correct' big engine for your car. If correctness doesn't matter, any tight 360 would be fine, 401s are getting harder to find cheap, but real nice to have the best of AM, if you're gonna play... Better to have your next engine in-process than leave the car sit outside for years while saving up, searching, & spending. $5k should get you around 500HP @6500. Don't cheap out with cast pressed-pin pistons! $500 gets you good race stuff. If you want high performance, the AM V8 likes to breathe, thinking SBC comparisons? Go bigger, valves, ports, intakes, carbs, headers, pipes. The ported AM head flows REAL good. See the other forums here. Don't care about all-out speed but wanna win in NHRA stock 290 class? I heard AMC clubs have been wanting someone to build one, and a good one should be a rocket (compared to the off brands).....
