    Block identification

Can anyone tell me what a large H and 7 cast into the rear upper block of my 360 motor might mean?

I also found the # 3195528 cast into it. I presume this is the serial no. of the motor? Does it have any significance? Can any information come from it?

3195528 is a casting number AMC used on their blocks. It's very generic, used on all 360 blocks from 70-84 and 401 blocks from 70-79. That's why the displacement is cast into the side. The H and 7 were also just casting marks that only meant something to the foundry. AMC didn't stamp any serial number into the blocks, which is why when people advertise "numbers matching", they usually don't know what they're talking about.

In the lifter galley, there MIGHT be a digit or 2 (some were knocked off before the block was cast). That would be the last digit or 2 of the year the block was cast. Since by the casting number you know the block was built 70-84, then a 7 in the lifter galley would be a 77. A 4 on a 360 could be 74 or 84 (the 84s had extra freeze plugs on the rear).

It's an AMC. What difference does it make?
