    Smile Finally finishing 401 swap.

    Here I am again. Talking about the same swap I wanted to finish months ago.
    The snow is thawing here in Colorado Springs and my Texas hands are finally getting to where they can hold a wrench outside. I'm waiting on a dipstick from Bulltear and then I'll be in business.

    Please feel free to tell me what you all think of my build.
    Especially coming from having a wore out 360 with a few mods.


    AMC 401
    .30 over
    9.5:1 pistons
    5-angle valve job
    Crower cam specs INT/EXH - Dur @ .050” Lift: 212°/220° RR: 1.6/1.6 Gross Lift: .464”/.488” LSA: 112° RPM: 1500 to 4500 Redline: 5000
    No oiling mods... Yet but I don't plan on spinning high RPM's
    Edelbrock Performer
    Holley 670cfm TA
    MSD Pro-Billet dizzy,coil, and wires
    Stock breather
    Milidon high flow pump
    Summit aluminum radiator

    Will I have enough torque for the stock TC to take off quick?
    Do I have enough CFM's?
    Will I stick to my seat?
    Should my Dana 44's be scared?

    Will all of this net me my goal of 400HP 450ft/lbs?

    Sounds like a nice all around build.

    What is the vehicle - Grand Wagoneer? How will you be using it - rock crawling, towing, sat night cruises? What tranny - T400? What xfer case?

    If you plan to use it hard, your tranny, transfercase, and axles could become the weak points with that kind of power at your disposal (especially in a heavy vehicle).

    I think that cam and a stock TQ converter will be fine (but this is not my area of expertice).

    A lower gear ratio at the axles would help acceleration, but not MPG. I'd recommend 3.73s w/ the 31" tires and no OD gear, 4.10s is you go to a 33". The 3.31s should put you around 2300 rpm at 65 mph - 3.73s would bring that to 2600 rpm and really make it feel snappier.

    It's going to be pushing an 85 Wagoneer.
    Rebuilt TF727 with an NP208 transfer case

    I'll be using it as a DD, hard acceleration on the street, and occasional trail rides. Nothing too serious offload though. It sounds like I want it all. And I do.

    Hmm. I might put some gears in. But I drive 80mph in this thing. I don't know how happily shed be singing with 3.73's. Mileage doesn't matter entirely too much because I don't have a car payment and insurance is cheap. But I'd hate to put this motor in an early grave

    Any HP TQ estimates?

    I am completely new to the AMC scene.
    These motors are highly revered and I'm hoping I set it up correctly for my application.

    I got the 401 painted up and settled in today. Chevy Red/Orange. I want people to scratch their heads when the good is open. I just have to hook up the tranny and accessories.

    After the cam break in between 2-3.5k for 20 minutes how long should I wait before ripping the throttle or a dyno pull?

    I want to know how much HP and more importantly torque it's putting down and nobody seems to have an answer/guess.

    I typed all this in once before, but I guess it didn't take.

    Desktop Dyno 2000 guesstimate:
    444 ftlbs @ 3500 rpm max
    378 hp @ 5000 rpm max
    420+ ftlbs from 2000 - 4500 rpm

    Should be a good all around build for the intended use. As I said earlier, a deeper axle gear would help it accelerate, but not help your MPG.

    The engine in my CJ was red. I liked to tell people it was a TA Javelin block (it wasn't). The TA Jav's had red engines.

    I appreciate you taking the time to crunch numbers for me!

    I hope that kind of torque can keep my wife stuck to her seat when I'm hitting the on-ramps.

    Although my gears and tires may not be perfect for a road warrior I am pleased that I am right up there with Ford lightnings in terms of power.

    And 100+ pounds lighter too :D

    A little 75 shot of laughing gas ought to make this thing a flying toaster.
