'74 AMC 304 Right Bank Smokes When Hot.

My son bought a '74 bone stock and when the engine gets to temp the right bank smokes a lot. I did put some No Smoke in to help the seals and it seems to be getting better.

I haven't gotten a chance to do a compression test yet but I'm thinking it is the valve seals.

    What say ye/opinion ?

    Thanks,
    Jim

Probably valve seals, could also be sludged up to the point that oil drain back from the heads is slow. That allows oil to fill the valve cover deeper than the valve guides.

If it's that sludged up, the only way to clean it is to scrape out the sludge, nothing is going to dissolve it. You'll have to pull a valve cover to do the seals anyway, you'll know pretty quickly.

I guess I could pull the cover.

Are those the umbrella seals or do I need to air up the chamber and replace the seals-can it be done that way ?

If I do one side do I have to do the other?

    Thanks again Bob,
    Jim

They are umbrella seals. You can do it with air. Need seals? I have a leftover set from from a complete gasket kit. I always have the heads cut for positive style seals when they're off. PM me your address and I'll mail them.

    Thank you Bob. PM sent.

Do they pop in place or just slide over like the 258 ones ?

    Thanks again,

Bob, how much air should I put in the cylinder-never done it and don't want to over do it.

Bob, should I pull each cylinder up to the top when doing each one (just in case) or that doesn't matter since the valve will drop out of the head anyway.

Bob, do you have a part number for those, or just go to NAPA?

My daughter bought a '80 CJ7/304v8 and her's smokes some as well.

Does her's use the umbrella type ?

    Thanks,
    Jim
