amc 401 flywheel ring gear question

my ring gear and powermaster starter killed each other,the ring gear I had on it was 164 tooth and the powermaster has a 9 tooth gear,from all the research I did it should have worked out,

havent ordered the new ring gear yet,trying to figure out if my ring gear was the problem.

no I did not use spacers,bellhousing is from a early cj,since im using an np435 4 speed,401 came out of a 1976 cheeroke cheif.

I seem to remember some older powermaster starters were shipped with the wrong gear for AMCs. It might be worth a call to powermaster. Did you keep the plate between the block and bellhousing? It has to be there to get the starter depth right. When you replace the ring gear, put the flywheel in the freezer overnight, then put the ring gear in the oven for a while, the gear will drop on and tighten as temps equalize.
