AMC Torque Command is for the most part a "904" and 727 Torqueflite with an American Motors bellhousing. This unit is a good performance transmssion as well as the GM T-400 version with the AMC bellhousing. both are one-peice aluminum transmissions. The bellhousings are not removable.


Four Speed

The Super T-10 was produced with many different gear ratios and more improvements for strenth and reliability. The first design had case flexing problems, so the second design case was made of nodular iron with a side cover made of cast iron. The tailshaft extention was made of aluminum and the mainshaft and input shaft diameter was increased for greater torque capacity. The input shaft and the mainshaft have more splines, which help fight shaft twisting. These boxes also have wide cut, course pitch gears for greater strength. The second design Super T-10 became standard equipment in AMC, Ford, and GM. The AMC box has a 28 spline input shaft. Super T10 AMC Series weighs about 93lbs.

In reference to the transmission, '71 and earlyer crankshafts will not accept 904/727 or T400 torque converters. The crank will need machining to equal '72 and later cranks if you have one and are planning to upgrade to the better transmissions from '72 and on.

For those whom might not know, hate for them to run into this problem after the engine build

I've been thinking of cheezing out and putting a 727 or 400 in the 85 and replace the Tremec 5speed I put in. Did either of those trannys come with the D-300 so I don't have to swap or carve up the output shaft?

from what i here the 727 will bolt right up to the 300

May need to see if BT can get me one to find out ... and particular years to look for or stay away from that you know of?

I gave them (BT's shop) the go-ahead to rebuild the bottom end of the YJ since I had about .2 inches of crank walk and I don't have the time or shop space to do it right now

Mud, just grab a drivetrain at UWI from a GWag. You will get the 360 and TF727 for cheap. And yes it will bolt up to the dana 300(you are running enough lift that driveshaft contact is not going to be a problem). A turbo 400 won't without an adapter and you will have a longer drivetrain. I am running a 401, 727, 300 combo in my jeep right now. Check out this site:

You caught that before I did :-) One of the 'giveaways' at the FSJ invasion was a Waggie!!! They guy wanted to sell it for $1500 but got no takers so he donated it to the lottery :-) I heard that a 15 year old young Jeeper just got his first project!!!

Thanks for the info and I'll be on the look out for a GW soon - but I gotta get the wiring fixed and get the 258 running first - build the 360/727, then do the big swap, my 258 into the YJ and the 360 in my CJ then rebuild that tired a$$ 258 for a spare :-)
