The front pumpkin looks just like the rear. I call Calif DMV and they told me the truck has been purged from the system, YES! LOL That means it has no leins or tickets and it is MINE ALL MINE MUHAHAHAHAHAHA !!!!

Nice looking rig! Quick way to tell if you have a D44 as opposed to a D53/D60 is to slap a wrench on the cover bolts. 1/2" is D44 and 9/16" for the other 2. The diff size is cast into the web. PS: This is Carnuck. For some reason I can't sign in under my regular name (haven't been able to since I first came here in Dec)
Jim just yesterday I go the front end back on the ground. I pulled the axle apart dam near 100% except I left the diff bolted in the pumkin. I did clean out the pumpkin, replaced the king pin bearings and races, all new wheel bearings and selas and brakes 100% including cables, cable guides and drums. The partsamerica bag O parts was right on the money! I even found some new Warn hubs from way back when and got them all bolted on w/ new bolts new knuckle seals and felts and evey dam thang!

I'm pulling the Dana 44 from my J4000 to sell pretty soon. It has locking hubs and 5 lug drums (It's actually last of the Gladiators) with 3.73 gears. I have a 10 bolt GM front axle with disc brakes and 8 lug wheels to put on. (I'm tempted to put in the dual wheel full float Dana 70 with 4.10s I have in the back but I hope to sell the whole '76 Dodge motorhome soon for $300 )
Welcome to Bulltear Brad! $100 eh? What a steal! That is a very stout looking truck, always loved the Galdiator's Grill.

At that GVW rating your rear axle is not a Dana 53, it's the D44.
The stamping will be on the lower right hand webbing at the aft side of the rear pumpkin.
The Dana 53 was used on rigs with GVW over 5,600lbs, and the D60 supposedly was not used until 1970 and after on J20 rigs. The next step up from the D53 between 1962 - 69 was the D70.
The D44 will have a flanged outer shaft, while the D53 has a tapered shaft with a large nut on the end of the hub (unlike the D44 or D70).

I have seen several Dana 44s with taper shaft as well (had a '68 parts rig) The Dana 70 only came with duals afaik (I have a '76 Dana 70 for sale for $300 with or without the motorhome it's in. Must go soon!)
Ok, I thought something was screwy between the TSM and Chiltons, but I don't think I'd ever seen an early D44 rear for the 5000GVW trucks.Originally Posted by junkyard jim
