    Adjustable big tube headers=BIG gains!!

So says a former SS/AMX racer at ssamx.com

He said there were HUGE gains to be had by tuning the headers.

    Adjustable headers...

...or maybe a kit to make headers adjustable:

4 primary pipes, slightly larger than the header primaries to slip over and slide in or out to adj length, welded to supplied collector that also has a slip over length adjuster, some springs, clamps, and weld on spring hooks.

If you decide TO build the headers, how about EGT bungs at the ports, a pair of O2 bungs (each collector), and pre-installed crankcase evacuators. Then ceramic coated. Probably can't be done all that cheap, but I'd rather buy them all done up than have to put all those bungs in and not have adjustability.

These professional series headers may help put AMC machines in the winner circle more often.

Here is how we used to tune our headers, do not know how we came to do this, but others in the early 70's were doing it this way. You have your regular header w/3"collector. Instead of bolting on the exhaust to the collector flange, we would bolt on another piece of 3" exhaust about 24" long. We would then get a grease pencil and draw a line from the front of the extender to the end of the extender. We would then make several passes down the track. The heat from the exhaust will melt away the pencil mark beginning where it connects to the header. You end up with the 24" extender with the grease pencil mark only remaining on back half. We would then cut the extender off about 3 inches beyond where the grease pencil mark disappeared. You have an extender bolted onto the header w/3" of greas pencil marking.

    Good luck!

Hooker sells the parts to make the primary tube and collectors adjustable. They have a variety of collector sizes and tube sizes available.
