One leaky 401 out, one rebuild 360 in...

I spent my weekend doing this:

Turns out, my 401 came back from the machine shop with leaky freeze plugs. So I had to get it out after going to all the trouble of getting it in my Cherokee.

I had a 360 rebuilt and waiting for my CJ project. So we put the 360 in the Cherokee so it would be running while I work on the CJ. The 401 will get the plugs fixed at the machine shop and then it will go into the CJ.

The good news is that the GM TBI conversion I did works reasonably well. I have to do some tuning but it runs adequately now.

I ended up blowing a transmission cooler line so I have to fix that. But that's minor.

I should have that 360 broken in by Christmas.

The 401 in that CJ should be a lot of fun.

    One thing I discovered.

When you have dogleg exhaust ports on the heads and you use a dogleg gasket but your manifolds have the older square opening, the gasket leaks right out the side.

When you use the right manifold on those dogleg heads, the exhaust leak goes away.

Anyone want to buy a driver side square flange exhaust manifold? It looks practically brand new.

I haven't gotten much of the info into my web page yet but I started one with some good links:

There's a few more pictures of some of my TBI work here too:

If I don't get the job I'm interviewing for next week, I'll have the TBI writeup done some time next month. If I do get the job, I'll be moving and won't have time to write it up until I get settled.

So I was in the process of fixing the leaking tranny cooler lines, actually running the engine to top off the tranny fluid when I hear a grinding sound and the engine quit.

I was afraid this might happen and it did...

I looked at the gear closely and discovered that a drunk monkey would have centered the gear better before cutting the teeth. Hell, I could have eyeballed it and it would have been centered better.

And, of course, I have to double check the machining job on the HEI distributor. That may have been a contributing factor as well. I have two known good pieces to compare it to so I should be able to see pretty quickly whether or not the distributor is machined properly.

Naturally, the gam gear is a little chewed up too. So EVERYTHING has to come off so I can swap it...

At least I got the flashing out of the cam gear and there was plenty of oil on the distributor. So it wasn't a complete fuster cluck.

Time to order the matched hardened gears.
