When I shut the heater off, and go to use it again, the heater makes a grinding/banging kind of sound. Does this sound like the pump going out, or the fan? How do I go about finding out what it is wrong?

COULD BE
1. A OBSTRUCTION IN THE RAT CAGE
2. A BAD HEATER MOTOR
either way you need to get it serviced and a decent way to go is to let a mechanic deal with it........although changing the motor is easy lets see if you can get it diagnost for free from a mechanic

After reading what you put MC, I'm thinking it's an obstruction in the rat cage. I park under a tree, and have leaves, sticks, etc. covering the hood of the truck, and gets into the cowl... I was thinking about it, and the heater motor was actually replaced just a few years back. I'll get it checked out. Thanks.
