The 258 block hasn't changed, you will want to look at the places all your bolt on stuff bolts on and see if the 79 engine has those holes. If not you will have to drill/tap them or use your 89 Head. The 79 will also have the heavier crankshaft in it (just for knowledge) I would say use your intake and ensure all your stuff will bolt up and you should be good to go.

I just swapped and 90 258 with a 79 258. I kept my 1990 intake and exhaust manifold b/c they were a little different. The fuel pump off the 1990 b/c it picks up the fuel feed and return from the driveside rather than 1 on the passenger side and 1 on the driveside. I needed a pilot bushing or the 79. and i changed the temp sensor from the 1990 onto the 1979. Otherwise everything bolted right up and worked out great. My only problem was bleeding the clutch when i changed it i think mostly b/c of the cold temperatures but I got that straightend out as well. I just did this last weekend

If you are wanting EFI I would say find a post 1991 4.0 with all the accessories, you can get one for less than cost of the MPI kit. I got a 2000 4.0 with all the accessories and computer for 1K with 25K in mileage on it. It bolts right in and will wire right up also. (That engine is in my 90YJ)
