Question on my daughters 80' CJ5

She has (torn down) 3-31 gears etc.

    3-31=Gearing

43-13........43 is the ring gear count & 13 is the pinion count.

    Question: w/the 360 modified & the T999 w/a 208 t-case she will be running 33's w/this gear ratio above make it a dog (pant,pant).

    I never had a 208 t-case & I still want her to have a good hwy gear/gas miliage but I don't want it to be a wolf,wolf.

Do you think a 3.54 min. or a 3.73. I'm gonna get her new carriers/gears anyway.

    Thanks,

I run 3.31's in my CJ-7 with 33's could cruise on the highway at 80mph all day and get about 14-15 mpg. I have a t-18 so my final gear ratio is 1:1

But I would like to do gears in it for offroad performance. And if you plan i changing carriers I would goto at least 4:10

Other wise 3.73 would be an improvment and I am not sure how much diffeence you would see between 3.54 and 3.31

    Ya I agree w/ya Paul, I have 33's (bfg's = 32") on the 79' 304 w/a 3.54 GR, I don't think that there would be much differenct between the 3.31 - 3.54??????????? hum I got to decide.

In my opinion, you're asking too vague a question. Find one of the online gear ratio calculators. Start plugging in numbers. The tire size you plan on running, what RPM you want to be at at what MPH. Stuff like that. You will get lots of opinions, but you have to plan for where you want the Jeep to be. Somewhere near peak torque is where you want your cruise. Then couple that wil the tire size you plan on running, the gear ration of your top gear, and you find what axle gears you should be running.

Sounds good, I'l have to get the 360 dyno tested then. unless someone knows what the peak torque is for a 360 , but then again this one has been worked over alittle. But a stock setting is a start.
