    Dana 44 spindle nut's

I am rebuilding the 44 in the front of my 76 Bronco. The spindle nut's (not wheel bearing's) have a slight tapper on the end. Does it have to be there or can I just us grade 8 nut's? And if I use 8's do I need lock washer's. There were not any when I pulled it apart.

The taper is a slight compression of the nut to make it "lock" to the bolt. You should be able to use high quality lock washers and grade 8 nuts, or some grade 8 nylock nuts. Just make sure they can't work their way loose.
